Rōsai is the first name of the artist who drew the forty pictures shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. They were published in a woodblock-printed book entitled Kachō Gafu (i.e., Picture Album of Flowers and Birds). Neither Rōsai’s surname nor the date of publication was provided but based on his artistic style and the type of ink used to print the pictures this book was most likely published in the late 1800s. Chemically-produced dyes which were first sent to Japan from Europe in the late 1800s were used produce the intense yellow and red colors evident on each of the book’s forty pages. Neither the colors nor the shapes of the flowers and birds are true-to-life which was typical of Japanese flower-and-bird pictures made in the nineteenth century. Their purpose was simply to entertain their purchasers.
